Providence Christian School in Kalamazoo

Mission Statement:

Providence Christian School is  founded upon the desire of parents of the Netherlands Reformed  Congregation of Kalamazoo to educate children according to God's Word.  They desire an atmosphere that reinforces the religious instruction of  the home and church. God's Word places the  responsibility for education upon parents. This total responsibility  begins in the home, is reinforced in the church, and extends to the  school once the child is old enough for formal education. The school is  of primary importance in the development of the child since most of the  child's learning hours are spent in this sphere. Due to its formative  importance, the responsibility for education cannot be delegated to the  state nor to a public secular institution where an education in  accordance with God's Word is impossible.

School History:

God has greatly blessed Providence Christian School in allowing the facility to open its doors to students in grades K-8 on September 6, 1978, in a rented school facility. Construction began on a new facility, and we entered our new building in December, 1979. Ninth grade was added in 1980. In 1982 the school received state accreditation. In 1988, a high school program involving the busing of local students to Plymouth High School in Grand Rapids was initiated, allowing all students to receive continuous education from kindergarten through twelfth grade. In 2001, special education became reality when a resource room instructor was added to the faculty to provide assistance in special needs. Eighty to ninety percent of our students stem from the Netherlands Reformed Congregation. The rest of the students come primarily from local conservative churches. Our smaller school size allows for close teacher-student relationships. The school has a strong support system with close parental ties and offers opportunities for volunteering in several areas. The school's core beliefs in Christian education are directly tied to God's Word. Teachers strive to teach from a biblical perspective, bringing God's Word to the foreground in all subject areas. Students are also urged to display Christian virtues in their relationship to others. The school is a drug-free school with a well-disciplined environment based on the scriptural belief that all behavior is subject to God's authority above all.
